Introducing the 1979 Susan B. Anthony Dollar - 'Near' & 'Wide' Rim - 2 pc Set, a tribute to a pivotal moment in U.S. numismatic history. This set celebrates the first instance of a female historical figure being featured on U.S. coinage. Susan B. Anthony, an iconic leader in the women's suffrage movement, graces these coins with her enduring legacy.

Minted between 1979-1981 and briefly again in 1999, the Susan B. Anthony Dollar was unfortunately short-lived. Its similarity in size to the quarter led to public confusion and required costly adjustments to coin-operated machines. Despite its innovative design, the coin was discontinued due to these practical challenges.

The obverse of the coin features a distinguished portrait of Susan B. Anthony at age 50, masterfully crafted by Frank Gasparro. The reverse showcases a design inspired by the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, carried over from the Eisenhower dollar. It depicts an eagle clutching a laurel branch on the lunar surface, with Earth visible in the distance, symbolizing America's pioneering spirit.

Late in its inaugural year, the coin's design was altered to feature a wider rim. The initial 'Narrow' rim variant can be identified by the larger gap between the date and the coin's edge. Conversely, the 'Wide' rim variety, introduced months later, has a thicker border with a much smaller gap between the date and the edge. This design change, implemented later in the year, makes the 'Wide' rim variety significantly scarcer than its 'Narrow' counterpart.
