Struck on a 1 oz pure silver 38.61mm blank, it boasts the highest PROOF quality. The reverse of the coin features the Lernaean Hydra, a mythical many-headed serpentine water monster, depicted with its deadly appearance. Many heads on strong necks are connected to its body. The reverse also includes the inscriptions 'HYDRA' and '2022'. The obverse side displays the standard Tanzania coat of arms with the inscriptions: 'TANZANIA' and '1000 SHILLINGS'.

The Lernaean Hydra, or simply Hydra, is one of the most well-known creatures in Roman-Greek mythology. This serpentine water monster, known for its multiple heads, is described by the ancient Greek poet Hesiod as the offspring of Typhon and Echidna. The Greek hero Heracles (Hercules in Roman mythology), son of Zeus, defeated the Hydra by cutting off all its heads. Throughout historical texts, the Hydra is noted for its poisonous breath and blood, with the regrowth of its heads being a feature added in more modern literature. Stories of the Hydra can be found across cultures, from the east to the west.
